Skywatchers in Madeira, the Azores and across Portugal will be able to observe a major solar eclipse on the 12th of August. The event is the first total solar eclipse visible from the country in almost a century. It will start at around 18.30, peak at approximately 19:30 and end by 20.30. The only total view in Portugal will be in the Montesinho Natural Park, in the Bragança region, where the Moon will cover the Sun for around 26 seconds. On the mainland, about 93% of the Sun will be hidden, while Madeira and the Azores will see a partial eclipse with between 74% and 77% coverage. Officials have warned people not to look directly at the Sun without proper eye protection. They say certified eclipse glasses should be used, since ordinary sunglasses are not safe and can cause permanent eye damage.
