Madeira Schools Gather to Promote Ocean Literacy and the Blue Economy

Under the motto ‘The sea that unites us,’ about 120 children and 40 teachers from various schools in the Region took part in the IV Blue School Regional Meeting at the Jesuit College this morning. The opening session was led by the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries, who noted that 74 schools are currently involved in the Blue School programme in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The programme is coordinated by the Directorate-General for Fisheries and includes around 13,500 students in activities designed to promote ocean literacy and awareness of marine conservation. It also aims to underline the importance of the blue economy in a region surrounded by water that has not always fully recognised the value of its territorial waters. Nuno Maciel said the Region has had a key role since the 60s in preserving marine protected areas. He added that this work should continue and be strengthened so that new generations see the sea as a space of opportunity and support the management of our seas, our area and our continental shelf.
