Madeira Records Portugal’s Highest Rate of Drink Driving

Madeira now has the highest rate of driving under the influence in the entire country, according to the figures reported. The current level stands at 3.5 arrests per thousand inhabitants, which is the highest in Portugal. UCAD coordinators are urging stronger road safety education in response to the problem. They say that a climate of impunity has helped normalise the behaviour. The group also points to tolerance and social acceptance as factors behind the increase in drunk driving incidents and arrests. The warning comes as authorities and campaigners look for ways to reduce risk on the roads. The issue has been highlighted in Madeira Weekly Press on 26th April 2026.
