Madeira’s resident population increased for the seventh year in a row in 2025, reaching 266,130 inhabitants, the highest total recorded in the last 14 years. The latest estimates from the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), based on data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), show an increase of 1,430 residents compared with 2024, when the population was 264,700. This figure is close to the historical peak of 267,965 seen in 2010. The rise was mainly explained by a net migration of +2,557 people, which offset a more negative natural balance. That natural balance worsened from -781 in 2024 to -1,127 in 2025, as deaths continued to outnumber births. The effective growth rate was 5.4 per thousand inhabitants, supported by a migration growth rate of 9.6 per thousand, while the natural growth rate stood at -4.2 per thousand. Porto Santo, Porto Moniz and Machico posted the strongest relative increases, while Santana and Funchal were the only municipalities with negative effective growth rates.
