The Funchal City Council will mark National Garden Day on the 25th of May with a programme focused on the city’s green heritage. The date pays tribute to landscape architect Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles (1922-2020), who is widely recognised in Portugal for his work in landscape architecture and environmental protection. Events begin in the morning with a lecture by arboriculturist Pedro Ginja in the municipal assembly room. His talk is titled ‘Historic Gardens and Landscape Art in the Historic Centre of Funchal: considerations on the tree heritage and other stories’. Three guided tours will follow during the day, starting at 11:00 am through the gardens of the historic centre, then at 2:15 pm around the Municipal Garden and its historical and natural context. A third visit will take place at 3:30 pm on the same route, with the talk delivered in English. Registration is open until the 22nd of May, with a limit of 15 participants per visit, and interest should be sent by email to djevu@funchal.pt, stating the number of participants in the group.
