Calhau de São Jorge is a unique spot where a small freshwater lagoon meets three swimming pools at the mouth of the São Jorge river. Surrounded by imposing mountains, it offers a dramatic and more “wild” feel compared to urban complexes, combining river and sea swimming.

How to find
From the center of São Jorge, follow the signs for “Calhau” or the beach. The road winds down to the very base of the valley.

Important to know:
Ruins: Right next to the pools, you can see the ruins of the old São Jorge port and its historic arch.
Fresh Water: The freshwater lagoon from the river is a great alternative if you want a break from the salt.
Atmosphere: It is one of the most secluded bathing spots on the north coast, often with fewer tourists than Funchal or Porto Moniz.
