Best practices to follow when you spot a Mediterranean monk seal
With the arrival of summer, beaches and coastal areas around Madeira become much busier. For that reason, it is important to remember the correct safety measures whenever a Mediterranean monk seal is seen.
If you notice a monk seal in the sea, do not enter the water. If you are already swimming, leave the water calmly and return to shore.
If you are taking part in water sports such as paddleboarding, kayaking, or similar activities, do not approach the animal. If the monk seal comes closer or tries to interact, calmly move away and exit the water.
If the monk seal is resting on land, do not disturb it. Avoid making noise and do not approach.
Whenever you observe a monk seal, please report the sighting. Whenever possible, include:
- Date
- Time
- Location
- The animal’s behaviour
- The number of individuals observed
